Ash’s Foundation Routine

In the beauty blogger world, the term “HG” is used to describe those just-can’t-live without products. The ones that you keep repurchasing over and over because they just work so well for you. The HG stands for holy grail.

I, ladies and gents, have found my HG foundation routine. Two products that work so well together for me that I want to sippeth from my cup till it runneth over…HOLY GRAIL!

A while back, I wrote a post about my top 3 foundations. They were Makeup Forever HD, Estee Lauder Double Wear and CoverGirl Stay Flawless 3 in 1. These are still my top three, however the CoverGirl Stay Fabulous is just so great that I have no need for the other two. Why buy foundations that are upwards of forty dollars, when you can get results that are just as good (and possibly better) for twelve buckaroos?!

Now , I said it before, and I’ll say it again. Makeup is super subjective. Because a product is really effective for one person, doesn’t mean it will be that way for everyone. This is especially true for foundation since people come in about a bazillion shades, and each company usually has a max of fifteen foundation colours that we are supposed to choose from. Another big factor is skin type. All I can say is that I am super oily and shiny, and CoverGirl Stay Fabulous is great on my skin.

I know youre saying, “Umm Ash, you already told us about this.”  Yes, yes I did. But there is a key difference. I said TWO products remember? Patience, grasshopper.

CoverGirl Stay Fabulous with BareMinerals

I have been setting my Covergirl Stay Fabulous with Bare Minerals original formula mineral powder foundation.  This product is described as an award-winning mineral foundation gives you all the flawless coverage you want with a no-makeup look and feel that lasts up to eight hours. The creamy minerals diminish the appearance of imperfections without drying out skin. The formula is clinically proven to promote clearer, healthier-looking skin. Bare minerals is formulated without parabens, binders, fillers, or synthetic chemicals.

Bare Minerals in Golden Tan

I decided to try setting my liquid foundation with bare minerals after one of my favourite YouTubers, Jaclyn Hill talked about doing this.  Sounds like a lot of foundation, but I literally use the tiniest amount of both products.  I use a Sigma F80 flat top kabuki brush to buff the CoverGirl Stay Fabulous in to areas of my face that need evening out. Then, I use a Sephora 55 air brush to dust the bare minerals all over my face. The result is really natural. The original formula of Bare Minerals (as opposed to the Matte one) has a really luminous finish. I don’t want to call it shimmer, as it is more subtle than that. So, it’s a really glowy fresh way to top the mattifing CoverGirl foundation.

As I mentioned, colours are tricky and the best results often come from mixing more than one shade. I mix CoverGirl Stay Fabulous 3 in 1 in Golden Tan with a tiny bit of a darker colour called Tawny. The tawny deepens the colour a bit and creates my perfect shade. The Bare Minerals that I use on top is the original formula in the shade Golden Tan.

And there you have it, my HG foundation routine. Even though I love this combo, I recently picked up a Makeup Atelier foundation to try after Wayne Goss said he felt it was probably the best liquid foundation in the world. That’s a pretty big claim. We’ll see how it stacks up to my new HG combo. Stay tuned to TNL to find out…

  1. I love a good foundation! I use the Annabelle Skin True Foundation but it rubs off like crazy whether I set it or not so I’m definitely in the market for a new one. I’m always scared to go foundation shopping because I feel like no matter how much I swatch it there always seems to be a red/orange undertone to the makeup and I don’t want to look like a weirdo haha!! Speaking of makeup, I’m hoping TNL will be doing an IMATS haul soon (nugde nudge hint hint!!!)

  2. My pet peeve is when foundation rubs off! Or, feels like makeup is sitting on my skin. I agree, it is SO frustrating to colour match. I can’t tell you how many times I think Ive got it , only to wear a new foundation outside and realize I look oompa-loompaish.

You may, or may not be seeing an IMATS post in the very near future. 😉

  3. My HG foundation is Makeup Atelier after trying it out at IMATS – it has changed my world. I was using BB cream before and had to do a lot of touch-ups throughout the day, as well as a lot of contouring and compensating for the flatness it tended to produce. Makeup Atelier is velvet smooth, and the colour I’m using is a perfect match right out of the bottle – I’ve never had that with just one product before. A little bit goes a long way too. I am not exaggerating when I say that I feel better about myself when I’m wearing it – I actually feel more confident. If my face is good, then I can manage whatever else comes my way in a hectic day LOL!

    1. So far I really like the Atelier foundation, except for the colour. I think that it gves my skin a bit of a grey cast. The formula is amazing though. I always have a really difficult time matching shades. I am glad youre so pleased with your purchase, Seph. Hopefully, I can pick up another colour and experiment with mixing until Im pleased.

Also, thank you so much for your incredibly sweet compliment. I have to admit I had to think long and hard about including a no makeup pic in this post. Luckily my friends and readers are so sweet and supportive.
