My name is Ashley, and I am an addict.

Ok, so this one is a little different from my usual TNL posts.

I am not even sure where I am going with this. All I know is, it must be shared. You know how when you find something that is just so good , you want to shout about it from the rooftops?

Speculoos Cookie Butter

My friend Abby recently returned from an NYC trip, and she brought me back a jar of cookie butter from Trader Joe’s. I had heard a lot about this stuff on the interwebs but couldn’t really wrap my brain about what something like cookie butter might taste like. I figured it would probably be ok, and then I tried it!

So…its basically a jar of crack. Umm, sit down Mr. Mayor… not real crack. I just mean it is HIGHLY addictive. This stuff is sooo good.

Even the name cookie butter makes me happy. It just sounds so yummy, right? Well, it is.

So, the actual name is Speculoos Cookie Butter. Speculoos is a type of crunchy Dutch cookie. In North America, Speculoos cookies are often sold as Belgian Spice , Dutch Windmill, or Biscoff cookies. I have never had any of those. Have you?The main ingredients are flour, pepper, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, cardamom and nutmeg. So, somewhat of a spice cookie.

So, anyway some great genius turned this cookies into a spread. I sincerely hope that this individual is enjoying some Zuckerberg type riches for his or her ingenuity.

Trader Joe’s Speculoos Cookie Butter is identical in colour and texture to peanut butter. However, it is entirely nut-free.

Speculoos Cookie Butter

Let’s get to the taste. It is the kind of thing you really do need to try for yourself. It is really difficult to explain. If a sugar cookie and a gingerbread man had a baby (ummm, and then turned it into a spread) then this would be it. That is the best way that I can describe the deliciousness that is Cookie Butter.

Trader Joe’s suggests that you eat Speculoos Cookie Butter on a bagel, brownie, waffles, pancakes, dark chocolate or pretzels. I have also seen people eating it on animal crackers, fruit and english muffins. I have even seen recipes that make protein snacks using Cookie Butter and protein powder. I can not report on how any of these combinations taste as I could not manage to get any further than spoon to mouth with my jar. Abby found it highly amusing that I can manage to complete a 10 day juice cleanse, but didnt have the patience to make waffles or something to eat with the Cookie Butter. Its pretty much perfection on a spoon , who needs more?

I finished my jar of Trader Joe’s Speculoos Cookie Butter in under one week. Maybe it is a good thing that this stuff is not available in Canada, or I would be out of control.

Bye bye cookie butter

President’s Choice recently released a cookie spread of their own. When I saw the President;s Choice Decadent Chocolate Chip Cookie spread I had to try it to see if it was as good as my beloved speculoos cookie butter. This kind of diligent research is necessary to inform my dear readers, you see.

PC Decadent Spread

Soo…it’s meh.

It’s ok, but an entirely different product than the cookie butter to which I have become addicted. This spread is more like a thin nuttella with chocolate chip cookie crumbs inside of it. Not really mah thang.

It seems that to find the real deal, it should say speculoos somewhere. Trader Joe’s carries their version in regular, crunchy and swirled with chocolate, and there is another elusive version called Cookienotti that made a brief appearance at Costco stores in the GTA, but is now difficult to find.

So friends, if you find one of these gems be sure to snatch it up. You’ll thank me later!

Have you ever tried Cookie Butter? What did you think?

  1. I’ve been obsessed with speculoos since my trip to NYC in 2010 (waffles and dinges waffle truck) and hunted it down in Toronto at a Belgian chocolate store called Leonidas one location on the Danforth and one underneath the Lob laws at Bathurst and St. Clair (its a Belgian spread) you can also get it at McEwans at Shops at Don Mills and now just recently, Costco has it!!!

  2. Oooh, I have to try this. It sounds so good – especially your description that it tastes like a sugar cookie crossed with a gingerbread cookie. Thanks for sharing with your fans 🙂

  3. I just bought my first jar of this stuff. It actually made it home before both my husband and I devoured it. And to think, we went to Trader Joe’s for their nuts and organic veggies and fruits for our NutriBullet! Oh and Trader Joe’s own shampoo and conditioner for my crazy scalp issues. Love Cookie Butter!!! BTW, Trader Joe’s opened a store about a 30 to 45 minute drive for us. I think with this CB stuff it is probably a good thing it isn’t more accessible to us.

  4. I’m avoiding going to trader joe’s. I end up eating this heaven in a jar in 3 days max. It’s literally like a orgasm in your mouth. That’s how I can descibe it.

  5. No Frills sells it. Cookie Notti or there is a brand new PC one. I’ve had them both and the PC one is closer to the TJ’s one.

  6. Meridith Tom, you nailed the description. My sister had bought a jar awhile back. I was like yeah what ever. Decided to have a sandwich with this on it. Discovered to hell with the bread, gimme a spoon! Was better than Nutella. Thankfully Trader Joe’s is an hour away from me, cause I’d definitely would buy more! Realized I had already eaten half the jar, had to lock it away to save the rest for my sister. It calls me late at night. I must resist the urge!
