June’s Get it or Forget it

Has it been a month already since we introduced our new feature, Get it or Forget it? Well, that’s a good thing because we have more to share with you!

Oh! Before we move on, have you checked out our 100 Days of Happy Challenge post yet? No? Well it’s a good thing you plan to stick around for a bit!

Chris

L’Oreal Youth Code Serum Intense

Youth Code

I love a good skin product. And with that, I love a good serum. Enter L’Oreal Youth Code serum. A little goes a long way and I really notice a difference in my skin whenever I use it. It helps to even out my skin and prime it before I apply moisturizer. This is done all while keeping my skin firm and youthful looking.

It’s really light (the consistency is in between gel and water, but closer to water), and my skin remains smooth and clear all day. I have very, very oily skin but this isn’t a concern using this product. It doesn’t add any oils and there is no buildup to fret about. And if you have oily skin, you know there is some fretting involved as the day progresses. If you’ve been looking for something to add to your skincare regimen without completing switching it all up, you could try this serum.

I say GET IT!

Eurospa Facial Masks

Eurospa

In keeping with my love for skin products – let’s talk about masks. I like to do one at least once a week to give my skin that much needed recharge… and that spa feeling never hurt either. So when I received these samples, I thought for sure I’d struck gold. Plus, they’re shaped into the profile of a woman’s face – very clever!

I like the masks that leave my face feeling brand new after I wash. When I use these, I have to wash and wash for several minutes before it’s all gone. And even after that, it takes forever to wash it out of my barely there eyebrows. I don’t like how it leaves my skin feeling; it doesn’t feel smooth and fresh, it just feels like I used a heavy product that won’t wash off. The instructions say to add to clean skin, so it’s not one of those wash afterwards masks. If you’ve use these masks, please let me know what you thought in the comments below!

As for now, I say FORGET IT.

The Invisible War

The Invisible War

No – this is not a beauty or health product or even food. It is, however, a must-see academy-award nominated documentary that I recently had the pleasure of taking in. Though I use the word “pleasure” lightly; there was nothing pleasant about listening  to these courageous women and men talk about being sexually assaulted in the military, and how it has affected their lives. What was even less pleasant was how their cases were treated – and by treated I mean covered up. There is a staggering number of these cases and a small percentage (if any) that suffer repercussions. To hear that some who were brave enough to take a stand eventually had their rape ruled as an “occupational hazard” left us dumbfounded. It tugged at my heartstrings and gnawed at my anger.

If you love watching docs, I highly recommend this one. Go forth and GET IT.

Ash:

You know when YouTubers do their monthly favourites and they start out by saying, ” I can’t believe *insert month here* is over”? It sounds so predictable and cliché because they say it all the time, but can I just say…I totally get it, because I CAN’T BELIEVE JUNE IS OVER! Like, really where the heck did this month go? June flew by with wings, lucky I tried some things that I am excited to share.

NYX Butter Gloss in Eclair

I am always very impressed with NYX products. They are always very good quality and the price point can not be beat. Fun fact-my very favourite all time nude lipstick is NYX’s Echo, if you’re wondering.

There are a select few stores in Canada that carry NYX. Rexall has a pretty fair selection of NYX products, but for the full she-bang of NYX goodies, you are better off to cross the border and get yourself to an Ulta. Or, Beauty Joint is a great site that offers some NYX products at great prices with very low shipping to Canada.

Butter Glosses retail for $4.99 but if you are lucky, you can catch them on frequent BOGO sales.

NYX Butter Gloss in Eclair

I absolutely adore these glosses. They are rich and buttery without feeling greasy or sticky. They wear very well and I don’t have to reapply them often throughout the day. The only thing that would make these glosses absolutely perfect to me, would be if they were minty. However, they smell like dessert, so I can’t complain.

I find myself reaching for Eclair almost daily, because it is just the perfect neutural gloss for me. It has just the right amount of pink to add a touch of colour without Barbie-fying me.  The way I like to use the Eclair Butter Gloss is to apply a neutral lip liner to prevent the colour from bleeding and then put the gloss on top. No lipstick needed!

NYX Butter Gloss in Eclair

As much as I love Eclair, I’d really like to try NYX Butter Gloss in Creme Brulee. It’s everyone’s favourite shade. I’m sure I will love it, but I will never know because it is sold out EVERYWHERE. Ugh. Anyway, I digress.

For the price, quality and colour range, NYX Butter Glosses are fantastic. I think Eclair is a versatile colour that would suit all skin tones. Go GET IT!

 Mary Kay Lash Love Mascara

I have been hearing amazing things about this mascara for years but something about having to order from Mary Kay seemed daunting and I just never got to give it a try. After seeing another rave review for this product. I finally put a call out on Facebook for someone to refer me to a Mary Kay rep. Duh. Chris was like, “Ummm, are you kidding me?” I had completely forgotten that she had written some Mary Kay reviews in the past and has a good friend who is a rep for the company. So, I ordered away.

Confession time- I have actually had this mascara in my possession for a couple of months now. But, because I am a lash lift addict, I wasn’t really wearing much mascara. Finally I cracked this sucker open in June and colour me impressed.

I ordered my Lash Love in black for $21. Mary Kay claims that with this product, lash volume looks instantly magnified and lashes will appear fuller, lifted and multiplied while looking naturally flawless, soft and healthy.

I really liked the flexible, sculpted brush and found it easy to apply. The mascara is on the thinner side, which I much prefer to thicker formulas. The black was dark without being overpowering on my eyes and it applied easily and evenly. I actually found that I like this mascara’s lengthening and defining better than its volumizing. Fine with me, as these are what I look for in a mascara anyway.

The mascara stayed put. It did not crumble or flake, but still removed easily with my cleanser and water.

Now, if only I had an incredible awkward and unflattering picture to show this mascara on my lashes. Oh, we’re in luck.

I am super picky with mascara, and am impressed with Lash Love. In addition to the way that it applies, wears and looks, Mary Kay claims that in contains an exclusive Mary Kay Panthenol-Pro Complex and vitamin E help to moisturize and strengthen lashes and defend against breakage. So, as far as Lash Love mascara goes…I have said it before, and I’ll say it again: mascara is so very subjective. Everyone’s lashes are different, and everyone prefers a different eyelash look. If you have read my reviews before and think we may have similar lashes/ preferences, I would say GET IT!

Lotion Labs Body Moisturizing Wipes with Olive Oil

I was excited about this one, I really was.

I can’t tell you how many times I have:

A) Forgotten to pack lotion when I was packing for a trip. Usually someplace where it is difficult to procure lotion…leaving me high and dry for the time I am away

Or

B) Packed lotion in my suitcase, only to find a wonderful lotion explosion in my luggage upon my arrival.

So, the idea of lotion wipes excites me greatly. It is a fantastic concept and my sensitive skin was happy to hear that these even contained olive oil.

Lotion Labs Body Lotion Wipes

The pack contains 50 lotion wipes and these retail for $5.99.

When I opened the wipes, I notices right away that they have a pleasant, clean scent. However all excitement faded when I pulled out my first wipe. The wipes were definitely dried out. I tried to rub it on my arm, but it did not even contain enough lotion to moisturize my forearm. There is no way that one of these could be used to moisturize an entire body. The wipes also had a greasy feel to them and I felt like I had to wash my hands after handling. Probably something I wouldn’t want on my body anyway.

It is possible that my pack of lotion wipes was a dud, and had dried out. But the packaging had not been opened, so this should not have been the case. I was gifted these wipes so luckily I did not waste any money on a box of dried up cloths. Based on this experience, I would not bother to pick these up again. On this one, I’m definitely going to call FORGET IT !

  1. Thanks for the great suggestions! I’m a huge fan of cleansing wipes for when I go camping, and I would have thought the moisturizing wipes would be good too – but I’m glad you warned me against wasting my money! Chris – that documentary sounds like it would be tough to watch, but on such an important subject! Ash – love that beautiful mascara demo pic, and I the lipstick you’re wearing is so beautiful too. Thanks for keeping me in the know.

  2. loving this post – adding the lippie to my shoppings list. I hear that Youth Code is a dupe for the Lancome Genifique serum – for a fraction of the price!
