In our Happy New Year GIFI post, I declared 2015 the year of the liquid lipstick.
It seems every makeup company came up with their own version and I was happy to try them all with open arms. Some of my favourites included the Lime Crime Velvetines and Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks. I have been hearing people raving about ColourPop Cosmetics’ versions, but I never got around to checking out the shades or placing an order.
For Christmas, I was gifted a gorgeous mini kit of the ColourPop Ultra Matte liquid lipsticks and I couldn’t wait to give it a try.
Before I get into all of the reasons that I love these bad boys, can we first just acknowledge the fact that they could have just called this ” the Ash kit”. The real name for this kit is Foxy, but let’s just go with my nickname for the purposes of this blog post , k? The Ash Kit ( hmm, nice ring to it) literally has all the colours that I would want if I were to curate my own liquid lip kit. I am super picky with my lip shades and these are ALL colours that I would chose to wear. That’s huge. Ok…so what’s to love about the ColourPop Ultra Mattes?
I just dig ColourPop’s vibe, guys. Check out the company statement from their website:
“ColourPop was born, raised and made with love in the City of Angels (aka Los Angeles) so we can react quickly to the latest and greatest trends and get them in your fabulous hands stat.
We take the phrase “if you can dream it, you can do it” to a whole new level and specialize in making killer makeup in every shade imaginable at prices everyone can afford. We think that whole barrier between fancy and affordable is absolute nonsense. That’s why all of our products have luxury formulas at prices that won’t break the bank.”
Love their philosophy and the fact that they back it up with great products.
ColourPop products are super affordable. That being said, I really wish they were sold in retail stores as having to order online is a bit of a pain in the derriere. Shipping to Canada rages from about $9-15 USD depending on the amount of merchandise being shipped. When you consider that the Ultra Mattes are only $6 USD each for a 1 oz tube its actually uber affordable. The mini kits like mine are $20USD.
I feel like I am so in love with the idea of liquid lipsticks that every time I try a new one I declare it my favourite. But , this is it…I swear. So matte liquid lipsticks tend to be a bit like pizza. Even when its not great , it’s still pretty good. They all have a beautiful matte velvet finish and great staying power. But where I feel the ColourPop Ultra Mattes beat the others is in the way that they wear ( or don’t wear, actually) and feel on the lips.
The ultra mattes are a very thin watery consistency, but still incredibly pigmented. I prefer this to a thicker formula because when I apply it to my lips it feels light and comfortable. When it dries matte, it does not feel dry or tight on the lips. Best of all, when I layer the product it doesn’t get chunky and clump up like some liquid lipstick formulas do.
So, let’s be real…every liquid lipstick formula will wear from the middle of your lips. There is a name for this in the beauty community, but here we shall just refer to it as booty lips. While every product is of course going to wear in time, the ColourPop Ultra Mattes wear the longest and have the least booty lip effect of any other liquid lipstick formula I have ever tried.
To summarize, the ColourPop Ultra Mattes are amazing. Here is a look at the shades that come in
The Ash Kit Foxy:
Beeper- warm mid-tone taupe
Clueless- dusty mauve pink
Tulle- dusty mauve burgundy
Creeper- true classic blue red
More Better- deep violet wine
I can’t recommend the ColourPop Ultra Mattes enough. I am particularly in love with the shades in the Foxy kit and would suggest them to anyone looking to try out some of their most popular and versatile shades. If you have tried any ColourPop products, I would love to hear about it. What’s your favourite liquid lipstick?
