Headache remedy? Saje Peppermint Halo

I suffer from frequent headaches. They are most commonly tension headaches that seem to be stemming from tension in the back of my neck and will radiate around my head and to my temples. Extremely annoying, but luckily usually not as severe as a migraine.

Because of these frequent headaches, I take a lot of Advil. Too much Advil. Extra strength liquigels are my jam and I reach for them regularly. They are quick and effective at getting rid of my headaches. I find that Tylenol never works for me and Naproxen does sometimes but it takes longer.

I am well aware of how unhealthy it is to take medicine frequently and really want to get to the point where I don’t take Advil at all. In a perfect world, this would be because I don’t have headaches any more. But, until this happens, I am forever looking for alternative remedies.

Over the years I have found some ways to help my headaches including massage, acupuncture, regular visits to the chiropractor, caffeine and yoga. But I can’t seem to shake them completely and sometimes (when the weather is wonky or seasons are changing) I have a headache pretty much every day.

I am familiar with the Saje company. Most notably, their very popular nebulizers that allow for the aroma of their essential oils to be diffused in a room. However, they also have an extensive line of essential oils and oil blends with topical uses for issues like stress, pain and poor digestion.

A bit about Saje from their website:

Co-founders Kate Ross LeBlanc and Jean-Pierre LeBlanc are committed to honesty, integrity, impeccable quality, and 100% customer satisfaction. Their mission is to connect people with the healing power of plants, and they invite you to join them in their connection with nature by trying some products for yourself. Experiencing the uplifting and healing benefits of 100% natural essential oils.

Our 100% natural essential oils are distilled from various species of flowers, grasses, fruits, leaves, and trees. We consider essential oils to be nature’s “life force”, as they capture the powerful healing qualities of the plants from which they are derived. The sad truth is that many essential oils on the market can be nature-identical, synthetic, or adulterated in some way, and it takes the real thing in a 100% natural product to be truly effective and beneficial to health. To ensure we offer only the best quality essential oils available, we source our essential oils from all different corners of the world.

I went into Saje to pick up their popular Peppermint Halo oil to help with my headaches and ended up leaving with their Pocket Farmacy kit. (The kit changed names from Pocket Pharmacy to Pocket Farmacy as a nod to the fact that the remedies in it are natural and plant derived, rather than drugs)  I chose this kit because it includes Peppermint Halo, as well as some other bestsellers in a convenient little case.

Soothing Stress Release Remedy helps alleviate symptoms of mild anxiety and promotes relaxation. It includes lavender, orange, roman chamomile, vetiver, geranium and clary sage.

Pain Release helps reduce inflammation and relieve muscle pain and stiffness related to tension, stress, overuse, or injury. It includes lavender, marjoram, peppermint, roman chamomile, rosemary, cajeput and eucalyptus.

Immune Remedy is a virus fighting blend that helps fortify the body, relieving cold and flu-like symptoms and uplifting the spirits. It includes tea tree, pine needle, rosemary, geranium, eucalyptus, peppermint and certified organic cinnamon.

Eater’s Digest Remedy helps to soothe stomach upset and ease digestion. Comes in a convenient pouch – just the perfect size for the pocket or purse.  It includes fennel, peppermint, black pepper, roman chamomile and myrth.
As I haven’t had the need for all of the oils yet, I want to talk specifically about Peppermint Halo.

Saje asserts that headaches are often the body’s way of communicating that something is out of balance – for example, hormones, or dehydration, or stress and tension. The warming and cooling action of Peppermint Halo works to reduce pain and pounding, while the sedative qualities relieve tension and balance the nerves.

I am really enjoying this oil. AT first sign of a headache or tension, I apply it to my temples and the back of my neck. It has a strong tingly sensation that I absolutely love that helps me feel more relaxed and less tense. This certainly helps with the severity of my headaches and eases the pain. It you don’t enjoy a tingly, minty feeling on your skin, this is not for you, you can definitely feel this stuff doing its thing. But, I love it. The peppermint scent is quite strong but fresh and pleasant. I have found that with continued use, I am finding the familiar smell comforting and relaxing in and of itself.

A nice feature of the packaging is that it features a rollerball applicator on one end and a regular dropper opening on the other. The rollerball feels so good when I rub it into my skin, particularly on my temples.

It’s like a mini massage. Saje staff suggested the other end could be used to pour a few drops into some water to use as a relaxing face or pillow mist. But, I have yet to try that.

The Peppermint Halo oil works on my skin for a long time, I continue to feel the tingle sensation for a couple of hours after application. A little goes a long way and while the oils that come with the Pocket Farmacy look quite small at 6ml each, I use mine all the time and have not even finished a third of it.

The regular sized Peppermint Halo is 10 ml and retails for $26.95. I will continue to purchase this size when I finish the smaller version that came in my set. At $59.95 for five 6ml of oils, I found the Pocket Farmacy to be a fantastic option.

It is giving me the opportunity to try some of the Saje bestsellers and have a little arsenal of natural remedies at hand.

While I will always be searching for the source and cure for my headaches, I will happily settle for anything that can soothe them and lessen the tension. I find the Saje Peppermint Halo to be a high quality effective oil that certainly helps with this. I also feel great about knowing that it is a drug free, plant derived product that is easy to throw in my purse and utilize as often as I like. I would highly recommend Peppermint Halo for those dealing with headaches or any kind of tension. I look forward to trying the other oils in my Pocket Farmacy. If you have tried Saje products, I would love to hear about your experiences and recommendations in the comments. Or, please share your headache remedies, I would love to try them!

  1. Lavender lemonade – steep 1-3 tbsp. of organic, dried lavender buds (number of tbsp. depends on how much lavender scent/taste you prefer – it is very potent) the same way you would steep tea. Then add it to pre-prepared lemonade or lemonade you made yourself from scratch.

    Meditate, breathe and enjoy 🙂
